Temple University Student asking for your help
My name is Todd Overturf and I am a student at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. I am graduating shortly, and was required to do a project which studies the communication skills required for the career I am interested in, which is real estate. I am being asked to conduct a short interview to gather some information. If you would not mind answering a few short questions for me that would be a big help.
1. What type of communication skills will a person need in order to become a realtor?
2. How to you go about finding new clients? (Family, Friends, Marketing, etc.)
3. What sources of marketing do you do to get your name out there? (Paper Ads, Radio Ads, etc.)
4. How important is it to work with other realtors in order to make a sale?
5. When presenting offers, do you feel it’s best to fax due to convenience or present face to face with the other clients?
6. What is the biggest communication tool needed in your daily actives? (Phone, Email, Face to Face communication, etc.)
Thank you so much for reading this post, and I look forward to hearing from you.

1. What type of communication skills will a person need in order to become a Realtor? -One can not be shy. One must either learn what to say and what not to say before entering the industry, such as working in a c.s. type field first, or learn the hard way, on the job. One must learn that if your client is quiet and reserved, that's not a person to start quoting Spartacus scenes in front of. One must learn to read body language and facial expressions. Look for signs of: Anger, disappointment. Because one is going to get A LOT of "Ya know, I'm kind of disappointed. I drove all the way up here, just to see that house." Even though you just explained that it's under contract. Learn that your clients 100% of the time have selective hearing and a selective memory. Therefore, they won't be and (don't expect them to be), keeping the lines of communications open with you unless it's to complain.
2. How to you go about finding new clients? (Family, Friends, Marketing, etc.). Any way one can. Start cheaply (unless you're loaded), and find what works. Don't re-invent the wheel. Don't bust your own balls; you're wasting your time, money and energy.
3. What sources of marketing do you do to get your name out there? (Paper Ads, Radio Ads, etc.). Anything one can afford. Business cards in as many hands as possible, as quickly as possible. Social Networking, your own real estate website, business cards. Small online display ads in LOCAL papers.
4. How important is it to work with other Realtors in order to make a sale? Very. In the beginning, one won't have listings. You'll have no choice but to show others' listings. Then, when one gets their own listings, other Realtors will come to them. It's also very important to keep the lines of communications open. "Where are we at? Do I need to do anything?" Is what one should ask themselves all the time. Ask for help too from your broker: that's what they're there for.
5. When presenting offers, do you feel it’s best to fax due to convenience or present face to face with the other clients? Fax, email, Iphone. Whatever device works to get the offer in as quickly as possible.
6. What is the biggest communication tool needed in your daily actives? (Phone, Email, Face to Face communication, etc.). Cell phone at the very minimum. Overpriced, overrated Blackberry/Iphone is a close 2nd.
Good luck now.Last edited by Chrisopher Moltisanti; 04-14-2010 at 03:31 AM. Reason: improper grammar and half post missing, naturally.

Here you go!
1. What type of communication skills will a person need in order to become a realtor?
Great interpersonal communication skills, the ability to sell yourself with your voice and gestures, the ability to give off the feeling of trust. If you can't sell then stick to the office.
2. How to you go about finding new clients? (Family, Friends, Marketing, etc.)
The Web has grown to be probably one of the greatest tools for finding new clients. I recommend hiring an SEO company to set your Website on the right path (which is the visible path)
3. What sources of marketing do you do to get your name out there? (Paper Ads, Radio Ads, etc.)
Search Engine Marketing Agencies, newspapers, PPC, word of mouth
4. How important is it to work with other realtors in order to make a sale?
In any field, making great professional contacts is a sure bet to success
5. When presenting offers, do you feel it’s best to fax due to convenience or present face to face with the other clients?
Depends... if you "feel" this is a really good client, face to face is best. But if you feel to be a client that is just browsing around wasting your time and not really interested in buying anything, then use your time on something else
6. What is the biggest communication tool needed in your daily actives? (Phone, Email, Face to Face communication, etc.)
The cell phone! Then comes e-mail.
