Default Career switch to Realestate and Where to sell?

I was just laid off from my job as an Art Director/Marketing Manager and wanted to check into something different. My father and brother are both Realtors in PA and I currently live in NYC but eventually want to move to South Florida.

My questions are, if you would be so kind to help:

    • Should I pursue real estate at this time?
This is a poor time to start a new career but you may have little choice.

    • Should I get my feet wet in NY first, then move onto to get licensed in FL?
Maybe select the lowest cost of living location.

    • Should I just stay in NYC and sell?
As I said, maybe select the lowest cost of living location.

    • Basically, where is the earning potential better?
    Where your heart is.

Try to find a good mentor. Offer your Art Director/Marketing Manager experience. If you're lucky, you might find someone to teach you the business and pay you as an assistant.

    Good Luck

I'd say that getting into Real Estate at any time can be tough.

If you start out in a great market, you'd never get the fundamentals of running a solid operation and when the lean times hit you'd be the first to go.

If you start in a down market, you better have someone backing you up financially, because it could be a long time before a commission check. But, the advantage would be that you could build some really strong business practices and outperform the rest of the industry when the market picks up.

Either way it wont be easy.

I'd suggest as 'Commercial Agents' already has to start in an area where it's more affordable. It would be easier to get started and that's where the bulk of the transactions are happening.

I would also tell you to interview some brokers and agents from both areas. Find out how things are going, but beware, lots of times broker will tell you what you want to hear because the want to recruit fresh meat.

Get a good strong consensus and then go for it!!!
