I am new, so i am not familiar with the SEO. I tried to search on google, but still not sure what is SEO, and what it does. What is so important about SEO for marketing?

SEO is important to internet marketing because a huge source of traffic to your website comes via search engines. SEO is about first of all having the proper html layout on your site so that the search engines will index you. Next is finding ways to take advantage of search engine algorithms to help get your page ranked higher in the search engines results.

To understand it easily break it up in two different and distinct parts.
1 search engine
2 optimization

Search Engine: A place where someone searches something. google, yahoo, msn, altavista, ask etc are search engines.

Optimization: Optimization is a Process which include a number of things. optimization means making compatible by adding/removing something or adding and removing something.

In search engine optimization we optimize a website to make it search engine friendly. seo follows all the necessary criteria set by search engines to make a site become visible in search engines when someone searches something related to your website's content/product/service.

SEO is the active practice of optimizing a web site by improving internal and external aspects in order to increase the traffic the site receives from search engines. Firms that practice SEO can vary; some have a highly specialized focus, while others take a more broad and general approach. Optimizing a web site for search engines can require looking at so many unique elements that many practitioners of SEO consider themselves to be in the broad field of website optimization

SEO is Search Engine Optimization. Search engines like Google, Yahoo, MSN and Ask.com examine your website looking for things like proper coding and relevent original content. They also look at the internet in general to see what others think about your website. Based on what they find they form an opinion about your site. If they think it offers searchers what they are looking for they will include it in their search results. The process of optimization basically insures that the site meets the criteria that the engines are looking for. If it needs help (and they all do) that's where the optimization process comes in.

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It's the process of taking one's website and "optimizing" it in such a way that it ranks high for certain keywords in the various different search engine such as Google, Bing, and Yahoo.

My son does that stuff for a living.

I doubt it that people would search for SEO in Google and not find anything about it. Anyways, here is a good read for google's guidelines and tutorials for newbies.
