Identifying ownership of a building
I need to identify the owners of a residential building in Columbia SC. I live in CA. What is the easiest, free way to do that? Is there online access to such public records--if so, which?--or do I have to call some city office in SC and if so which?
Thanks.

You can find the tax records and owner for pretty much any property in the United States online. Tax records are a county issue so what you do is google the following, "Columbia south carolina county" in order to find what county columbia is located. In this case it seems to be located in Richland county. Next google, "Richland county south caroliina assessors" this will bring you to the county assessors office for Richland County which keeps the tax records on file. The result is: http://www.richlandonline.com/servic...ssorsearch.asp
You should be able to get the information you need from this government site.Looking for a realtor in Minnesota? How about a Missouri realtor in St. Louis or Kansas City? Agents Ranking researches the performance of thousands of real estate agents every year and hand selects the best realtors. You can also find information on Minneapolis Realtors at Minneapolisrealestates.com.

Thanks, but it looks it's a bit harder than that.
The property is listed as a LLC company at its own name and address. However, I know that the real owner of the LLC company is a company in CA. And I need that ownership info.
Any way to locate that?

The secretary of state will have all the filed formation documents for the LLC. You can get the docs that identify the members of the LLC from the SOS website.

Hi, Joe,
Thanks.
Is that information publicly available on SOS site, or do I have to ask for it? If it is, under what category can I locate it?
Best regards,
FP

In Texas you have to pay to get the info. It's pretty cheap, like $0.08 per page of documents, but it may vary where you are at. Check this site and see if that is what you are looking for.

Joe, thanks again.
I managed to locate the LLC which was filed in 1986, but the status is now canceled. What does that mean? It also provides an agent of service and process.
Some background: I need to lodge a complaint to the owners of the building regarding the behavior of the property management. Chances are that nothing will be done, but at the very least I want to make them aware of it. The question is who do I contact to make sure that the owners will get it?
Regards,
FP
