Does anyone know of any that are free or at least very cheap and solid. Starting out, I am just trying to add this functionality to my website. A newsletter subscribe and mailing list...

I don't know of anything that's free and not using canned content. But I do use a program from templatezone.com called High Impact Email 3.0 that generates professional looking newsletter and handles all the mail merge. But you do have to come up with your own content.

I'm just starting out and I'm working on putting together a newsletter (the layout).
I use Microsoft Word for the layout, then print to Adobe and email it as pdf format, same way I'm gonna make it available from my website.
The only one time cost is ScanSoft (40bucks from Office Depot) which converts whatever you use into pdf files.
I admit it's requires work to put the layout together but that's only a one time thing as well. After that, I'll just add my content and graphics and I'm good to go. LOL, at least that's how I have it planned.

I've used Microsoft Publisher for many years to create print newsletters. I provide the content. I like the idea of converting them to PDF files and posting to my web site. The articles for my newsletter are also posted on my blog.

I've had good success with Mail List & PHP List before. Both are free, relatively easy to intergrate with an existing website, offer sign up boxes/options with double opt-in, and best of all a WYSIWYG editor. I think you can get either at hotscripts(dot)com <--can't post links yet
