I am cheap and considering buying a listing in the yahoo directory. Is it worth it? Do you see any significant changes in the serps? I would like to know, I rank really well #3 for bellingham real estate depending on the dc will it be enough to help it rank higher?

It should help you with Yahoo. It's one of the better directory links that you can have and I recommend it, but some say it is too expensive, but to each their own.

The real value in a link in Yahoo's directory is in the number of websites that use it to feed their link directories.
you know all the link directories out on the web?
There are tons of them that pull from either DMOZ or Yahoo to feed them content.
To be able to sell you a link or an upgrade, they need content in there to start with and scraping Yahoo's is one of the more popular things to do.
So by being in there, you'll get scrapped by others - so not only will you get the link from Yahoo - a high ranking directory, you'll also get all the spin off value of being in the directory.
if you have the means, it's not a bad investment.

Cool thanks for the information. I guess your right they do syndicate or other sites scrape the directory for links.

At this point and time in the market are there really that many links added via scrapping? I mean how many new directories could there be and how many of these survive long enough to get page ranking that will make their links worth anything?

Anybody care to explain what scrapping is?

Scrapping is when other humans or robots copy and paste a websites content into their websites.

Anybody care to explain what scrapping is?
Might help if these folks got the right spelling. It's "scraping" not "scrapping" (as in "scrape") and involves an automated process for copying content from one site to another.

Yahoo directory? Definitly not worth the money.
It's a directory link which has been paid for ... Google would value a well ranking natural looking link any day.

my site is http://www.shimmerlighting.com/ wanna list under lighting
yahoo's directory isn't really worth it for the price, but it is a nice little shortcut if you don't feel like spending the extra time building links

I used it for my website only because I was too impatient to wait for Yahoo to find it on it's own. I am in other directories as well, but once I was in the Yahoo directory, I was immediately indexed by Yahoo and starting getting traffic from there right away.
That's mostly because I had a new domain though and was starting from scratch. There are other (probably less costly) ways to do this. I just wanted to get in there quick, which was worth the money for me.

Huh, before reading this post, I did not know that Yahoo's directory listing cost is so ridiculously high. Darn!

.
We bought a listing in the Yahoo directory. We bought the listing in about March, 2008 (about five months ago). As you might know the listing cost $300.
Our web site is listed in the following sub-category:
Directory > Business and Economy > Business to Business > Real Estate > News and Media (our web site is here)
The Yahoo directory listing has not helped our Alexa ranking. The Alexa ranking for our web site currently is 5,862,477.
Looking at the server logs for our web site we might get one visit click through from the Yahoo directory per week.
I don't think that we are going to renew the listing with Yahoo.

I heard that yahoo will not refund the 300 if you dont get approved. Is that true? I dont rely on organic searches but I am starting to get better results. It certainly takes a ton of time. I am thinking of buying the yahoo directory. This conversation is interesting
thanks

Who uses yahoo? You're better off spending the $300 on backlinks/articles/article directory submissions......

I just don't think people are using directories anymore so the only reason for the link is to get some google PR but I wouldn't spend $300 just for one little link for a spider to read. Like someone else said, you are better off posting blogs, contributing on forums etc.

Hi, for those who don't want to spend $300 to automatically get listed in the Yahoo directory you can try to suggest a site for free. There is no guarantee your site will get listed and it probably will take a few months to hear a response.
To try this, go to the yahoo directory, select the category you are interested in and in the top right corner click on "Suggest a Site"

For how long is the $300 worth of listing? A year?
If it's for a year, I think $300 is reasonable enough. That would be $25 a month or less than a dollar a day.
It's Yahoo and it's known. You can expect traffic from it.

Hi, I think if you submit a sitemap to yahoo explorer you will get all your pages index pretty quick. The $300 seems to give you only one link and not all your pages. First thing I do when I want to get a site indexed is to submit sitemaps with yahoo and google.
You can get one generated for free on xml-sitemaps dot com
Hope it helps.

I would pay the money to Yahoo and submit your site maps as well.
Yahoo and BOTW are the two that are worth paying for in my opinion. The Yahoo directory builds good backlinks to your site.
