Hello from Brooklyn, New York

Hello everyone.
My name is Thomas and I'm 24 years old. I'm from Brooklyn, New york and I was recently working in my family owned florist for a few years and have been looking to get into the real estate industry for quite a few years now. I'm finally able to focus on real estate and will be going for my license in the next few weeks and then try to find a position in a brokerage company. I know it will be difficult and take a lot of hard work, but I'm prepared to put in the effort.

My questions to all you professionals out there is what kind of advice could you share to a beginner like myself? I also understand that the better part of this year is going to be difficult to make it in real estate, especially as a novice, and I was just wondering what kind of things I should expect. I'm trying to educate myself as best I can and look forward to speaking with you all over the course of this journey.

Welcome to the forum. I look forward to reading your future post. Sounds like you have a great plan and luckily a family business to assist to get you thru the first difficult first year and a difficult time for all realtors in general.

Get your self in with a local brokerage firm, get your own business cards, get yourself out there in the community, let other business in area know your doing real estate now. Ask everyone who comes in family shop if they are looking to buy house or knows anyone who is. Maybe the brokerage firm will use your family shop to send plants to new homeowners. They do that here in our area. Good for there business also.

Thanks for taking the time to respond to my post. That plant idea sounds really good. It's a small gesture in comparison to a house, but it goes a long way in creating positive relationships. Thank you for the tip!

No 1: Don't buy into the negative talk regarding market conditions.
No 2: Take the top performers out to lunch and quiz them on the
business. You might get a bone thrown to you too!
No 3: When someone asks you "How long have you been in the business"
my answer when I was your age was "Seems like forever" and
then change the subject.
No 4: Get out there and meet your first client.

Vancouver, thank you for the advice. Believe me, I am soaking in every bit of information from you guys. I'm just starting out so I have a whole lot to learn. My brother, who is 28, has been in the business for almost a year now so we hope that we can one day be partners. It would be nice to be able to work with your family. I hope I make the right decisions along the way.

It's all good tomeako. We're all here to better ourselves and I have no problem with you adding your input. It's nice to know that there are some rookies around here like myself. We should definitely chat some more seeing as how we have something important in common here.

I have another general question to ask and I'm hoping someone can help. I've been looking for a good real estate book for beginners that gives a good introduction to the industry. Does anyone know of any specific books out there they can recommend? I'm trying to make it a little goal of mine to read a new real estate book every month and I naturally would like to start at the beginning.
