I have found many SEO web sites offer little more than catch words. While most SEO sites state how important the proper placement of key elements is, many fail to follow their own advice. What is strategic placement of key elements? There are two aspects, the first is to have a good title and meta description tag. Most SEOs get this correct but fail on the second aspect which is a hierarchal presentation of content using heading tags. One way search engines rate content irrelevancy is by the way it is presented. A simple rule, encapsulate main topics headngs in <h1> tags and sub headings with <h2> <h3>, etc, with appropriate content following the heading tags. Simple? Yes, but how often do web pages miss this "simple" rule?

I have tried using words strategically on several sites and the pages do actually do well for those terms when used this way.

I need to work on the top/first words. I didn't realize the importance.

Where did you learn of the importance of these words?

I agree with you. Placement comes very handy getting the SE rank your website for keywords.

Another thing to consider is how spiders read sites. Just like people, they read from top to bottom and left to right. That being said, when it comes to keyword placement, it is wise to get your keywords as far to the upper left side of the page as possible.

To do that, make sure you analyze your HTML code. If someone else designed your site, it may not be coded like it is read...

what are the H1 H2 and H3 headers? Is this something you can use on the free website builders? Just curious because i want to tinkle with a website idea. I have a webmaster for my main site, and i would also like to talk to them about this but i want to know what i am talking about.

h1, h2 and h3 are heading tags. if for example you put htags on your targeted keywords, search engines will easily notice and will think that the certain keyword is relevant to your site because it is on heading. so if your targeting a keyword, try putting htags.

Since we are on the topic of strategic placement of components. I would like to add that most people use a list of links starting at the top left and then it flows down the left hand side of the page. This is not a very good layout if you want the spiders to read your content. Since they read left to right and top to bottom it is best to put your link list on the right hand side so that the spiders read your content first rather than linking away from the page.

I would say it is a good guideline but not necessarily an absolute.

Yes, I think so... Its a good guideline but you don't have to follow it exactly... There are alot of other placement strategies you can try with. For my the most effective so far is the blog like site and the links are at the right side.

What you have said is absolutely right but not needed everywhere. Every site requires different approach for optimization.

Suppose you have a directory then you can place H1 tag but where will you place H2, H3 atc. Proper navigation is needed everywhere but a site without proper navigation is also performing well in serps. you should have only good content and quality links from niche sites.

The H1-Hx tags are very helpful in telling google what the sub categories are about...placement on the page is critical as well...the higher up the page the keywords are, the more relevant they are suppose to be...in addition to sprinkling them throughout the page as well

really, the moral behind this story is keep your content relevant and lay it out so that people (and spiders) can find your information easier. using H1-Hx tags does just that!

just remember, it's not just about appealing to spiders, but to the traffic your higher search position gets. no sense of getting top search position if it makes your site harder to convert traffic, know what i mean?
