View Full Version : The problem with DMOZ

is miscommunication. I have been involved in many threads here (http://www.sitepoint.com/forums/showthread.php?t=247837&page=2&pp=25) , there (http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=10765&page=9&pp=10) and even on the yahoo! search blog (http://www.ysearchblog.com/archives/000095.html) where the thread was closed due to my arguing with an editor (it wasn't the fact that he was with DMOZ but that his statements were false and out of context with what the blog's post was about, the new search engine algorithm Yahoo! has installed.
We have yet to see a significant change in the effort DMOZ could make to let honest webmasters help them. Assuming that everyone is out to get them is like me calling you a spammer for posting on my blog. The problem is people like ring99.com who are hardcore and hiding. Noone who has been around for a long time wants to be a spammer. I myself find DMOZ instructions very hard to read and not very clear for the average webmaster to understand.
The resource zone is only an unofficial forum by the way but it causes more damage than good.
This is just my 2 cents, me being worn out by the constant arguing and bickering.

What upset me in the Yahoo! blog was the fact the the DMOZ editor's defense of DMOZ was the same like the comments "I hate the new algorithm because my site is not listed".
That IMO is not valuable feedback but self serving garbage. I can go to any internet marketing forum and read threads all night about it.
My focus is on what search results are best for the average web searchers since creating those is the direction the search engines are going.

The last time I posted on the subject of dear ol' Dmoz (new thread) I got a warning from WPW Admin, so now I have quietened down, but I can really see and feel the frustration of so many posters. Going into the Dmoz forum is like Daniel and the Lions Den. Keep up the good work Mike.

The problem in resource zone is mainly that some of them are pretty much grandstanding for each others. Not naming any names but having spoken to editors individually has made it clear to me. That is bad communication for sure and my advice is not to go in there unless it is really important. I also don't like the regular forum flame wars. They are pointless. I will not let myself get dragged into those anymore but I will make my points when I have them, that is both: pro and con DMOZ/some editors' behaviour.
Labelling DMOZ as bad because of a few editors is like hating Peter Jennings for having cancer even though you have to attack the cancer or it will take over your whole body or kill you. The whole place reminds me to my house when I used to smoke inside. It was disgusting and I had to open the windows and doors for a while to get some good air inside.
We will see what is going to happen with DMOZ in the future.
May I add that resource zone is only the "unofficial forum" of DMOZ and some of the head editors are very unsatisfied with it. That still does not justify the blind eye since sooner or later things need to be dealt with or they will get worse.

You are as always spot on, but talk about Google Backlinks, the DMOZ Forum is the place to post, and here of course

ok back to DMOZ ;)
There are a lot of problems within DMOZ and I can only encourage everyone not to get into the line of fire.
There are many great editors but there are also real estate editors who are manipulating by keeping competition out and giving listings to their friends.
It is very ugly what I have seen. I do get more info than most of you guys and will share things from time to time but it seems that the more fighting happens, the less things get done.
I am being a part of the solutions and will do what I can to help DMOZ shine some light into the organization but too many are battling to keep their positions for all the wrong reason.
