View Full Version : Big Yahoo Update

Yahoo just announced that they have released a new index.

Looking at the sites that we manage, there were not many changes with older sites that have established links. On one of our RE sites, 2 important KW phrases bumped up a few places to #1. We now hold #1 for our 7 primary KW's for that site on Yahoo.

Looking at newer web sites, these all experienced drops in their SERP's for primary KW's. The preliminary conclusion that I have drawn from the analysis of our sites is that Yahoo now places greater importance on backlinks.

We have been building links at a slower pace than usual with a few sites to see if it has any impact on the Google sandbox.

Check your Yahoo rankings. Are you smiling or crying?

Wow - the results certainly aren't very stable. One of our new sites had its primary KW drop from #21 to #98 as soon as the new index hit. Today, that KW has bounced back to #30. A lot of other KW's are bouncing back as well.

It's hard to tell what the heck is going on here with newer web sites.

jumped from 200+ for keyword: San Diego Mortgages to...#3 baby!
http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=san+diego+mortgages&sm=Yahoo%21+Search&fr=FP-tab-web-t&toggle=1

Really - the only 2 things I have done are:
1. link exchanging..probably added 20-30 backlinks over the last couple of weeks (thanks San Diego Real Estate!)
2. Optimized my homepage text a little - geared more towards San Diego Mortgages and less towards San Diego Home Loans..

wow - #2 on MSN too...

still not ranked in google - damn sandbox!

It’s impossible to determine any rhyme or reason to it all at this point.

Randomly checking the SERPS I am not at all impressed with the relevancy so far.

A canned template site (same host I use) with no backlinks has placed at #1 for several kw's & she hasn't even personalized any of the canned verbiage that comes with the site with the exception of adding her photo & company logo. Very few pages, no mls, etc. I'm hoping this is one of those new site glitches and it will fall down to its proper position.

Looking at the #1 spot for LVRE I can’t see how it could possibly stand. The HP for this site is a collection of Google Adwords and no content.

Several other sites in the Top 10 on that KW phrase have no business there either.

I find similar results in checking several markets I have no real interest in.

If it does stay in its current configuration, Yahoo! will most certainly loose the ground they have gained in 2005 IMHO.

Congrats, Tom!
Hope yours stays and hope all the others will gain ground when they decide to come up with a final algo.
I just blogged about it here (http://searchengineblog.net/2005/04/yahoo-update-and-blogs.html)
Just click on " Yahoo information blog " where they announce " Yahoo! Launching New Search Index Tonight "

Congratulations Tom!

Like Mike I am ready to see the final version of the algorithm for “city+real estate”.

Looking at several markets I don’t think they are finished. At least I hope no for their sake because of the sever lack of relevancy in the SERPs.

Pretty sad how little traffic Yahoo drives for a term like San Diego real estate. Makes you wonder why anyone would want to be number one for a term like that

It appears as the Yahoo “Wheel of fortune” has yet to quit spinning.

Looking at the SERPS it would be a smart move on Yahoo’s part to continue tweaking the new algorithm.

Many results range from moderately disappointing to absolutely laughable.

Sharpen your pencil Yahoo! There is more work yet to be done IMHO.

Boy, Mack, you are not kidding. Someone over at Yahoo has been hitting the pipe with those results...its like traveling back in time to when black hat was brand new. They must be freaking out over MSN's strong showings. My guess is that they are bleeding market share to MSN. With results like the current, its no wonder.

You nailed it Charles, but with SERPS like Yahoo is turning out, their market share will continue to spiral downward.

And for all the Google naysayers, one element in the mix that I have not seen discussed was the possibility of Yahoo shooting them selves in the foot. Who would have thought?

All this chatting made me look... and I'm not sure I like what I see, but at least I didn't disappear.

#7 for Phoenix Real Estate
#3 for Phoenix Real Estate Agent
#4 for Phoenix Realtor
#1 for Phoenix Homes
#1 for Phoenix Homes For Sale

Of course those last two stand to reason if Yahoo is placing on spam. My site would be spamming the words Phoenix and Homes (if it weren't the name of my site) since I mention it all the time. IE "On Phoenix Homes you will find..." and many other instances like that.

VegasMack

Congrats on Yahoo! JimJ!

Not only are you ranking well, but it is one of the FEW Yahoo SERPs that look relevant IMHO.

Good show! :D

Hey way to go Matt.

Maybe you and JimJ need to do some coaching here?

What were you before the Yahoo update?

Thanks for the pat on the back, but I don't know about coaching...

For Phoenix Real Estate I used to be #3, now at #7
Though I did move up from #2 on Phoenix Homes to #1. That appears to be caused by the repetition of the words on my HP.

Keep up the good work Matt.

We are all proud of you here at NRED!! :)

Check your KW density on both phrases and then emulate the percentage you currently have on Phoenix Homes on the KW phrase Phoenix Real Estate.

Please keep us posted.

Yahoo... what can I say. I saw there was an update to this thread, so before posting I went in to check.

Today I am #3 for Phoenix Real Estate on Yahoo. I just don't get it. 7th, then 5th, then 7th again, now back to third where I was months ago. Wierd.

Well it appears as though Yahoo settled down right before I got sick, so with a quick prayer, I took a shot at moving one of the Vegas sites back up.

While I was laid up, I got a phone call that the site did move back up in the Top 10. :D

Never under estimate the power of Prayer. ;)

God is AWESOME!
