Folks is it just me or is Google making some major changes? I have moved up and then back and then back up and now my BL's are way off!

Google has been pissing alot of webmasters off during this update, including yours truly. My sites were dropped completely from the serps, then returned after a couple of weeks only to be intermittently dropped again for a couple of days at a time. Finally for the past 5 days or so it seems to have stabilized and overall I'm up about a hundred spots in the serps. However, my backlink count seems to have stayed put. It does appear that alot of others in these forums are experiencing a BL update, but I've seen nothing so far. It seems that when Google does these BL updates that you'll see varying numbers for a while then it will settle down. Try not to sweat it too much (I should take my own advice  ), Google requires alot of patience as I'm finding out.

Google's datacenters have not been in synch for a while. A few of the SERP's and BL's appear to be much older. You can check your info across the datacenters by going to www.mcdar.net and then clicking on the Datacenter Q-Check link.

Google BLs are only a sample, using MSN or Yahoo should give you a better idea

Can anybody tell me why the BL's are different in G, Yahoo and MSN? And how do you know which one is the most accurate?

Google has stated that they only show a sample of the total links that point to a site. As for Y and MSN, I couldn't tell you if they report 90%, 100%, or another percentage.
What I can tell you is that in the past few months (even before the official announcement of MSN search), the MSN bot has been very aggressive in spidering deep into a web site and continues to do so on a regular basis. These results seem to be updated in the MSN database in a relatively short amount of time.
If you have a new site, Yahoo does not crawl the site as deep or as frequently. The Yahoo/Inktomi bot will become more agressive once your site has aged 5 or 6 months. Even then, Yahoo does not update their database as frequently as MSN or G, so it may take longer to see any changes.
FWIW, one of the reasons that I reject a bunch of potential link partners is because of their poor internal linking structure, which in turn prevents bots from quickly finding my outbound link.

So I guess Google will be working on their code until the end of the year, so until then, they can't be trusted. :)
