Adsense - Pros and Cons

You have that site on-line for quite a while, its generating a good number of hits every day and you're thinking whether or not to use AdSense advertising on it to make it generate some form of income.

Well this is a description of the pros and cons of this approach to Internet advertising. AdSense has definitely hit the Internet like something from another planet and people are very excited about it everywhere. There are negative aspects to Adsense and alternatives to consider.

AdSense is generally a great tool for webmasters. Whereas, they would use to worry about how to raise enough money to keep their sites profitable, or at least keep them on-line those worries are gone.

AdSense allows webmasters to forget about those worries and concentrate on creating good content for their sites. In fact, the emphasis is now on creating quality content (often associated with the top-paying words) which will bring you many visitors.

AdSense can also very well integrated with your website, it's easily customizable in terms of colors, size and position which means you can experiment with it in any way you like to maximize your income.

AdSense is a very good means of generating a constant revenue on your site. All you need to do is create some quality content and keep it updated constantly and you can literally live off your website. A lot of people are doing just that nowadays with AdSense, so it's become sort of a business in itself.

It's also a great program because you can have the same account advertising on all your pages. This is great for webmasters wit a lot of content because it means they don't have to create many accounts unnecessarily.

But as stated, above, there are some negative aspects to advertising with AdSense and here's a small list of such cons.

Clearly the largest negative impact the AdSense program can have on you is through Google closing your accounts. Most of the time this happens because of so called 'click fraud', which means somebody would be producing artificial clicks on your page.

There's one really nasty side to that. It doesn't have to be you making those artificial clicks. It could very well be your competition doing this in order to shut you down, or the competitor of whoever is advertising on your page, looking to drive their marketing costs up.

The earning AdSense brings you are by no means constant. In fact, they're not even close to that. Anything you do to your site could end up being a big mistake costing you a great deal of money. It's that kind of pressure that has a negative impact on you.

First of all, you constantly need to make sure your site is in the spotlight of search engines when people are searching for whatever it is your site is about.

If you fail to do that you won't have any visitors, and that of course means you won't have any AdSense revenue. In a way this is nothing new, as any form of generating revenue on the Internet with advertising has such a drawback.

And finally, another major problem is that you constantly have to feed your site with better and better content. Now, of course, certain sites are very well geared towards doing this but with some types of content this is rather hard to achieve. This is often why the services of a copywriter are employed to generate more and more content.

When writing original content, the best thing a website owner can do is research a topic thoroughly and then return to writing with lots of information they can out in their own words, and show their own opinion on.

So there are the pros and cons of using the AdSense network for generating profits through advertising. Now the choice of whether or not these work for you is yours.

I have limited experience with adsense but the site which I maintain that has it has not received any feedback from using it. There have been click throughs on his ad but no end result contact. The site is a good looking site and the content is befitting the adwords.

My feeling is that it is better to pay for a SEO specialist to continue to enhance your ranking and move your ranking up vs pay for adwords. I personally almost never click on ads.

I used AdSense last year for about 4 months while my web site worked its way up in the Search Engines pages. It's hard to judge the effectiveness of it, but I would rather have some visibility vs being on the back pages. A local Realtor is using AdSense and I don’t click on it either.

It really depends on your niche. If you have a site where people are looking for information or a product.....adsense would be the best way to go.

The success of PPC depends on your market, some of our clients do great with PPC, such as those in military towns or hot markets. Other clients do badly with PPC especiallly when they dont' know what they are doing.

If you're a large realtor in your area and deal strictly with selling property or renting property I would say adsense doesn't help your cause. You'll probably be driving traffic out of your site and cheapening the way your site looks.

If you're a real estate portal on the other hand then adsense is another way to generate revenue.

I am trying adsense on my site and I will let you all know how it goes. Since I am a free site I am not using adwords, but we'll see how effective adsense is in generating per click funds.

One thing you really need to keep in mind is the cost that comes with implementing adsense on your site. Granted, you may get $.10-.25 if someone clicks an adsense ad on your site, but is it really worth it? For that $.10-.25, you have just lost a potential lead that may never visit your site again.

I agree with the above poster.

If you have a company real estate site you shouldn't have Adsense for other real estate sites. If you're a directory then it makes sense although you're probably getting your revenue from featured listings?

I would like to hear from anyone who is using Adsense for real estate sites on their own real estate site (not directory).

If you want to get traffic early then Adsense is good. But, if you want to do long term business then it's not good.;)

Why do you say that?

Hello MarriedToRealEstate,
We use Google Adsense facility to seem our site top on the search result. We can get that position till we pay for this. Once we stop this payment, our site does not seem top on the search result. So, If you want to do business for short term, then it might be achieved by Google Adsense. But, after while, it can't be possible to attain it without having good content to attract visitor.
And, suppose your site having a good content and you do Google Adsense, then some users may be visited your site. Then, internet surfer may be visited your site again and again due to having good content. So, ultimately, your traffic will be increased.
Now, you can understand what I am trying to say.:)

leri, Adsense or Adwords has absolutely nothing to do with your search engine ranking except for the fact taht if you're shelling out good money for Adwords, you will appear as a sponsored link and you'll pay for a bunch of worthless clicks.

I went through almost $6K in Adwords in 2005 and it was an absolute miserable failure for me, a total waste of money. Shortly thereafter, I turned to learning effective SEO and through experimentation I now have several of my sites as the #1 ranking for my keywords in Google. In fact, I've recently beenleri getting new sites indexed and ranked first page in less than a week in most cases.

As far as using Adsense to monetize your site, IMHO there are more con's than pro's to the service. Far too many webmasters are illogically banned and earnings confiscated right before their first payment is due. Search for "banned by adsense" and you'll see what I mean.

I personally use Adsense for 10-15% of my advertising space but for my forums I use Kontera, Ads-Click and ADSDAQ which are all much better performers than Adsense.

I find that interesting that you didn't get anything after spending that much on a pay per click campaign. Who did you go to for SEO, or did you do it yourself? Does anyone know of a good deal for getting SEO done on a website?
