Can anyone provide some solid info on the differnces between the algo's for yahoo and G. I started optimizing my site not targeting a specific engine; however, the results are now forcing me to consider this.
I do very well for a young domain in Yahoo and starting to gain ground in MSN, but google shows no love. I have the same basic strategy as every newbie, go get links from directories and related sites(no recips) and build as much content as i can.

If you have a new domain it will take between 9-14 months to rank well for competitive terms on Google - if the on-page and off-page optimization is correct on your site.
Google has taken great pains to prevent spammers from turning and burning domains. So not only do you need quality, inbound links to your site, but these links must also "age" a bit before they become trusted links.
If you want to get to the top of Google quickly you will need to invest in PPC. There's no other way around it for new sites if you are targeting popular keyphrases.

That makes a lot of sense. I believe google is the most popular search engine. However, Yahoo and MSN are all right, but you can go higher in the rankings faster.

yikes - i took off a couple weeks from seo and my site has dropped like a rock in yahoo. Is fresh links and content that important to yahoo or could it be something else.
Over the past 6 months or so i was steadily climbing and got up to 5 for an internal page i was optimizing. Today 40 something, whats the deal?

Tim Mayer at Yahoo recently confirmed that they began an algorithm update on Monday, and expect that it will be concluded by Wednesday. However, we all know that most algo changes roll out, roll back, then move forward with a different variation of the original.
My advice is to site tight until there is an official posting on the Yahoo Search Blog (http://www.ysearchblog.com/) that announces the algo change has been completed.

Wow - Thats crazy timing for a major algo change with the holiday season upon us. That could make or break some peoples businesses for the entire year.
I guess yahoo isnt concerned with that nor should they be. There job is to produce the most relevant results and if thier schedule says do it now then so be it.

I'm happy with Google though

For the past 3-4 years Google has had a major algorithm change or tweak just as the Christmas shopping season begins. Does anyone else remember the infamous Florida update?
I seem to remember Yahoo making a major algo update around December 15, 2005.
This winter season - so far - Google hasn't made any major changes changes.

I think it's still too early to draw any conclusions. I'm still seeing a ton of volatility in the SERP's. Right now there's a lot of junk showing up in the Top 10 for many searches.
When I say "junk", I don't mean spam sites. What I mean is that the relevance of the results should be better. For example, when I search "city name + real estate" I expect to see agent sites, not real estate schools or some of the other off-point sites I am seeing.

in my opinion yahoo is a better search engine, it uses less politics to provide actual search results.

unless you work for google you can only go off the idea that links, good webpages, and optimization are the ways that googles algorithm works. Same with yahoo. The way there algorithm works changes every six months anyways so just when you think you got it figured out they will change it on you.

Does anyone really ever know what goes on with the Google Algo....:)
No one is going to really know what the differences are between the 2 companies and their proprietory algorithms. The only thing that you will discover is the basic differences in what they produce for search results...but not how they got to that point. I wish I did know...then I would sell that knowledge to the highest bidder

If only we did know, I think I would be on a sunny beach right now just watching the surf enjoying the fact that I didn't have to work all the hours!!! :)

It seems to me that Yahoo puts more emphasis on your domain name than Google does, but other than that they are very similar. One possible difference I have found with some non-real estate websites is that Yahoo seems to put more of an emphasis on informational sites on the first few pages of results, while Google has no problem with a bunch of commercial sites being in the top 30. Has anyone else noticed that?
