View Full Version : Yahoo! Playing With Algorithm

Well Yahoo! is playing with their algorithm.
This morning I saw never seen before SERPs when checking “Las Vegas Real Estate” and a few other KW phrases.
None of the usual Top 10 are now listed on the first page.
Has anyone else seen similar results in their markets?

Our first page results are still the same for our 3 primary KW's. ("We're #1! We're #1!).
My big beef with Yahoo is that they take forever to index and rank new sites.

Well they must just be doing it in some markets (or it hasn’t come to “a Yahoo! near you” yet). I just check “San Diego Real Estate” and the same thing happening there. All new Top 10 sites.
The relevancy with this new algorithm is poor to say the least, so I do not see them staying with it. 404’s, directories, newspapers, old news articles and such.
If they implement this algorithm network wide Google and MSN will breathe a sigh of relief. This would take Yahoo! out of the running for the top SE and place them at a distant 3rd position IMHO.

Mack,
I don't notice any difference in the top 10. Your group of sites is still #1, #3, #5, and #13........
Your seeing something totally different from this?

Yahoo is tweaking an algo. I think they are testing this on a few DCs. Over the last couple of days Yahoo has increased its pages indexed from 2 mill to over 6 mill. They seem to be following google everytime google increases its index so does yahoo and then the dust settles.

It does look like Y! is beginning to bring new and updated pages into their index. Unlike Google (which constantly indexes and updates new sites), Yahoo bots seem to gather information that is "stored" by Yahoo. Every 4-7 weeks Yahoo takes the new and updated pages and populates them in their main index.

Maybe that's why I had been #1 on Yahoo for certain kw's for a long time (under my old domain name) but recently fell to #6 & my old domain is still showing even though my new domain is cached. My old domain has a 301 permanent redirect to the new domain. Google & MSN show my new domain.

I've been pretty disappointed with Yahoo as of late, too. I hope they get their algorithm right because I find all kinds of irrelevant searches. They also tend to pull up internal pages more often - anyone else finding this to be true?

That's a good thing. Let's say you sell in 5 or 6 different towns in your area. You can create 5 or 6 pages and optimize one town for each page. That's much easier than trying to optimize your main page for 5 or 6 towns.
We also use this method to optimize for names of private communities and developments.

Just a qiuck note but I have noticed everytime google does an update and increases their index, Yahoos index increases as well, could this be related?

I think that Yahoo! is moving, only slower. They are fine tuning right now big time.
I think they are coming along and learning from previous mistakes.
Yahoo! has still a strong following so I doubt that they will miss out on being head to head with Google and msn, where as it looks this road is headed.
I am not sure about any of this but I follow the pattern and to me it looks like less than a year from now, those 3 search engines will be very close to each others when it comes to number of searches performed by overall web surfers.

Yahoo needs a lot of work IMHO. Right now, they aren't on par with MSN or Google. If they don't do something, MSN is going blaze right by them to challenge Google for top dog.

Maybe it was wishful thinking on my part. I just realized that my old outdated pages are moving up ... web sites I forgot I owned like http://www.designer-handbag-stores.com http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=designer+handbag+store&fr=FP-tab-web-t&toggle=1&ei=UTF-8
moving on up while my new and better ones are not even being cached.

You have a point with MSN's last update. I don't know what the hell they are doing. Some of the results are pretty crappy lately.

Yes I was really disappointed with MSN when I noticed that same guy that is still #1 for our KW has another site www.henderson-las-vegas. com listed at #7 that is running all the same bogus links and redirects.
Google and Yahoo! have banned him, maybe MSN will catch on too.
You would think that MSN has as good of a technical staff as G & Y, or maybe they just haven’t brought in the “A” Team yet.
If this type of manipulation is allowed to continue it will be a two way fight for the Top SE and Mr. Gates won’t be in it I’m afraid.
