You're right to a certain point, as there's many things to consider before getting alleged "higher rankings" -- I've been a Professional Webmaster for over 12 years quite literally creating 100's of websites, and have seen many changes in all of the search engines.

If you focus on less competitive keywords such keywords containing your local town names you are serving, you may get higher ranking quicker. :)

you right about that...real estate is a very broad field, especially when it comes to working with keywords. You have to break it down to a more specific market...

Ranking is the first part but it won't help at all if you can't convert.

Well said.

I deal with a couple of agents that are highly ranked in the major SE's, they receive hundreds of great enquiries monthly but they are too damn lazy to reply properly.

I have even been to their office to sort out a way of answering e-mails, set up a process and told them what to do!

And they still moan that they are not selling anything!

I am developing a web page for my wife. She is excited that her site's page rank has finally climbed above 0. I am an inexperienced webmaster and would like any pointers. You can check out the website from my profile since I don't have enough posts to put a URL in my post yet.

Thanks

IMHO the main thing in a real estate website is the usability. If prospects don't like the site they will leave and it won't matter if it is first or not. If there is no effective call to action they will leave without contacting you.

There are a lot of people who make money off their sites without the help of search engines although it is more expensive.

Real estate websites should focus on local rankings. Because if you are fighting for a keyword in the ranking war, then some company not related to real state might be investing for the same keyword.

So it is good to win the local wars and then move on to the big ones ;). That's really how I got my company started, and it worked like a charm!

Make sure that all your inbound and outbound links are relevant to your site's content and key words. Also, I've been told that your links should be with sites that have a page rank of 4 or above.

No the most important part of the website is it sells the properites to the user... whats the point in having a high traffic site with no conversion?

The advice I give to my clients is to initially use a website as an auxiliary marketing tool. People who already have a career and a profession can rarely afford to become an expert designer or developer. After all, it's easier to hand out your business card with your website on it, than to learn the ins and outs of SEO.

Once you start seeing some real traffic on your website, I would suggest concetrating on practical usability. In software programming there is a term called abstraction layer. It basically is the part of your site that the user pays attention to. The buttons, forms and search functions. Even if your website is not the most attractive, these functions can really help.

And finally, once you start converting traffic into real business, re-invest it into your website. You wouldn't believe how rare and effective it is to use real money to improve a website. Graphic freelancers can really help.

Do you do your own SEO or do you outsource? How much time does it take up on a regular basis?
