If a return air grill is improperly located in the same room as the furnace and combustion appliances the condtion can be unsafe.
Toxic exhaust gases can be sucked out of the chimney through the return grill and spread through the home. If a permit was obtained for equipment installation and basement finishes it would be a good idea to contact the municipality and to inquire as to why this was allowed.
Either obtain combustion air for the equipment room from general basement air, permanently remove the door to the room where the furnace is located or relocate the return grill.
The existing conditions are hazardous and unsafe. Corrective actions may be inexpensive. Prior to expiration of your inspection contingency, it is necessary for you to obtain further examination and analysis by a qualified, insured and reputable specialist, tradesman or service technician to define the scope & cost of the necessary corrective action.
