This thread was started to answer the many general questions, users have about Google and how it updates its search results, PageRank, and backlink results. This thread also answers general questions about how Google displays backlinks.
Start here before you ask any questions about PageRank updating, backlink updating, or search result updating.
How often does Google update its search results?
Google updates its search results, also known as SERP's, continuously. This means that google changes the result pages as it spiders the web and finds new links and content.
How Often Does Google Update PageRank and Backlinks?
Google updates their Backlink results and PageRank results every 3 – 6 weeks.
The update usually begins on a weekend or a holiday and lasts for 3 – 4 days. It is very common to see different results across the different datacenters during this time. Also, if there are different results across google datacenters when searching for backlink results, this means that an update is in progress.
You can check the search results across google datacenters here.

How often does Google dance?
Google does not dance anymore and has not danced for over a year. A google dance is a term referring to the way google used to update their SERP results, every 4 – 6 weeks. There was usually a massive change in the search results and the search results were generally unstable. Now google uses a continuously updating pattern so the results shown by google are much more stable than they once were.
Why doesn't google show all of the links to my site?
Google has always shown only a sample of the links coming into your site. These links are updated in the search results every 3 - 6 weeks. Even though google only shows a small sample, this does not mean that google doesn't count the other backlinks when displaying search results. Google updates its search result pages for standard searches continuously, and these search results take into account all links that google has found.

How Often Does Google Update PageRank and Backlinks?
Actually, this should be clarified as visible PR and backlinks. The reason that SERP's bounce every day (besides the latest data propagating through the datacenters) is that Google constantly updates their database.
If things like backlinks and (internal) PR were not constantly changing then their would be no reason for the SERP's to be in almost continuous flux.

As usual, great post. Might be worth having a paragraph about the Sandbox as well.

Google tells you to have a robots.txt file. having an incorrect or restrictive robots.txt file might affect the effectiveness of your AdSense which is the Google warning here, not to go without.
Also, frames can be an issue, which is why it's imperative to have good code and to use the proper AdSense format - which can be specified "this page uses frames".
Your point about reading well is quite valid; also be sure to understand or ask when you don't - especially before making a post that may have folks rushing to delete their robots.txt file without need or merit ...

The databases are updated on a more or less continuous basis now. Periodically, there may be a more "substantial" adjustment, perhaps a change in the ranking algorithm or something else, and that tends to get called an "update". In reality, PR probably fluctuates along with any o most of the tweaking Google does but the Toolbar PR graph only gets updated when Google feels like it - often, this seems to be a few days to a week after an "update" but there is no fixed schedule.

Is there such a thing as the Google Sandbox. I have read other links that say that no matter how good your site is, they will not index or rank you for up to a year. Is this true?

Yes, there is a Sandbox. Since proper inbound links to your site play a large role in obtaining Google rankings, the speculation is that much of the Sandbox is weighted on the age of the links to your site.
How long does it last? Some people say 6 months, some say 12, and others say over a year (although over a year is probably poor SEO). My belief is that the length of time in the sandbox relates not only to the age of inbound links, but also the quantity of inbound links and the competitiveness of the entire search phrase or word pairs in that phrase.
That is why some new sites do have good rankings on secondary optimized phrases and receive some traffic from Google. For example, a real estate site might have a top 10 ranking for "XYZ residential community". But as soon as you add the word pair "real estate" to that same phrase the site is nowhere in the SERP's.
Some people claim that they know how to beat the sandbox, but I don't buy that story. To those that claim to beat the sandbox I say show me one new white hat site that ever ranked in the top 10 in Google for a competitive phrase (300+ daily searches and over 1 mil. indexed competing pages) and stayed around the top 10 without sinking into oblivion.
Oh yeah - it looks like we now also have a Yahoo sandbox as well.

I posted above, and just in the last couple of weeks it appears that I am out of the sandbox, at least the Google sandbox. I am now achieving first page Google search results for my major key word searchs (for example, Palos Verdes realtors and Palos Verdes real estate).I still seem to be mired in the Yahoo sandbox though

Congratulations!
One thing to keep in mind is that Google is still processing their new algorithm update. According to Matt Cutt's at Google, the data center at http://66.102.9.104/ has the latest results. The good news is that you are still on the first page on this datacenter as well.
Once again, nice job! When you jump out of the sandbox it's like your six years old again and it's Christmas morning - you just can't wait to see what comes next!
